Cut-DM – The meal box study

Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes both have a great impact on the individual's quality of life as well as a socio-economic significance. Dairy products can be part of a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that could have a positive impact on diabetes as well as help solve a societal problem. The purpose of the 'Meal Box Study' is to uncover the effect of long-term carbohydrate reduction on disease markers related to Type 2 diabetes.

The project will address the effects of long-term carbohydrate reduction in the context of food provision on measures of metabolic disease related to type 2 diabetes (T2D). The researchers have previously shown that a carbohydrate-reduced high-protein diet reduces glycemia in subjects with T2D within 6 weeks, but the long-term effects are still being debated. We hypothesize, that partial food provision is required for patients with T2D to obtain high compliance with long-term dietary regimes in order to improve metabolic control. To obtain reduction of dietary carbohydrates, proteins and fats will be increased. Thus, the provided meals in the intervention diet will be enriched with dairy products, which are naturally high in fat and protein. Outcome measurements will include relevant health parameters and key risk factors of obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Primary endpoint will be changes in glucose lowering medication. Secondary endpoints include blood glucose control, adiposity, insulin resistance, blood pressure, blood lipid profiles, inflammation, gut microbiota and liver fat content.
